With BERTRAND along the Lysefjord

At BERTRAND, the focus over the next few weeks will be on "trekking", or in other words, long distance walking. There will be brief posts on our blog that will make you want to enjoy this beautiful sport.

A few years ago, some of the team from BERTRAND set off to hike along the Lysefjord. This is in Norway and is about 40 kilometers long. At its deepest point it is about 500 meters deep. It is the southernmost of the large fjords in Norway and it is lined with tall trees. They packed BERTRAND, which was not only easy to stow in a backpack, but also filled them up and provided the necessary nutrients to survive the tour and still be strengthened.

The tour went on for four days and stretched from Preikestolen to Lysebotn (unfortunately without climbing Kjerag) past a few sights. Afterwards it went up the stairs at Flørli. This staircase has 4444 steps and is one of the longest wooden staircases in the world. The stairs follow the locks, which provide the shore with water. On the way you have a fantastic view over the treetops, onto the Lysefjords and Preikestolen, a natural rock plateau.

The breathtaking nature in Norway invites hiking and camping and BERTRAND has a strong desire to once again undertake a trekking tour in the land of trolls and fjords.

In the next and final article in our trekking series we suggest hiking routes that could be your next destinations.

Tropical BERTRAND Muesli

Sometimes, BERTRAND is more than just a shake containing all the important nutrients you need. With a little creativity, you can use it as an ingredient as well. Today we've got something that'll really bring summer to you.

Tropisches Müsli mit BERTRAND

5-6 tbsp BERTRAND classic or vanilla
the same amount of liquid (milk, water or coconut milk)
4 tbsp unsweetened yogurt or plant-based alternative (ex. coconut yogurt)
½ a ripe mango
Pineapple (optional)
Coconut flakes
Optional: a bit of vanilla sugar for sweetness

First, mix the BERTRAND with your chosen liquid and let it sit for a moment. During this time, cut the fruit into small pieces. Mix the yogurt and BERTRAND in a bowl, and then fold in the fruit and the coconut flakes.

Coconut milk gives the muesli a pleasant, tropical flavor, which is a perfect match for the fruit. The liquid is made from the grated pulp of a fresh coconut and is lactose free. That makes it perfect for anyone who wants or needs to avoid animal milk.

With BERTRAND against the summer heat

Summer is here, and with it comes the heat. For many people, summer heat is just hard to handle and when you're not on vacation lying on the beach but in the office, in school, or at the university, then it's not all that pleasant. To help you get through the summer well and with a cool head, we've got a few tips for you today:

Cooking is never enjoyable in the heat. Instead of doing it, switch to dishes that you don't have to cook. A refreshing salad, a cold tomato soup, your BERTRAND with ice cubes – the possibilities are endless. For example, you can also freeze fruits for breakfast and mix them with (vegetable) milk and BERTRAND for a refreshing shake. "Healthy" ice cream for breakfast, so to speak. Many of these dishes are also not very heavy in the stomach and lighten your load even more in the summer. Generally you should avoid greasy food when you are warm. And most important: always remember to drink enough.
Avoid tight clothing made from synthetic fabrics. Airy, loose clothing made of natural materials is more suitable for high temperatures and you don't sweat as much.
Remember your sunglasses, protect your skin with sunscreen and avoid staying in direct sunlight for too long. If you're outside, look for a shady spot.
Early risers and night owls have clear advantages in the summer because at these times it's coolest in the summer. Try to adapt your training times to the circumstances or choose shady running routes.
People who live on the top floor dread the hot days. Air well in the morning and in the evening and then darken your apartment. It also helps to keep electrical appliances to a minimum because they generate additional heat.
Take advantage of the nice days. Drive to the water, have a nice evening on your balcony, meet up with friends in the park for a picnic and enjoy the sunshine. The warm season is over all too quickly, and despite the heat, it helps most to make the best of it.

Savoury BERTRAND dip

Sometimes, BERTRAND is more than just a shake that contains all of the important nutrients you need. With a little creativity, it can be used as an ingredient as well. Today we have a recipe for a savoury BERTRAND dip that will also work well at the next barbeque party.

Savoury BERTRAND dip with avocado

Two EL BERTRAND classic
One ripe avocado
A splash of lemon juice
A pinch of salt
A pinch of pepper
As desired, some garlic or chili flakes
Water for mixing

Halve the avocado and separate the flesh from the peel. Season the avocado and mash in a bowl with the lemon juice. Add the BERTRAND and stir in with a little water. Serve immediately or cover in the refrigerator for an hour. The BERTRAND gives the dip a pleasantly nutty note and a delicious crunch.

About avocados:
The avocado is a butterfruit that is rich in unsaturated fatty acids that give us a pleasant feeling of satiety. For vegans, it can also serve as a vegetable protein source.

Study on dietary supplements

How is the intake of dietary supplements related to nutrient intake and mortality? This blog article addresses a study on this particular topic

What's it about?
Is there a link between nutritional supplements, nutrient intake, and mortality in US adults? Previous studies found that more than half of US citizens consume dietary supplements. The relationship between advantages and disadvantages is controversial. The general research opinion indicates neither advantages nor disadvantages. However, some other studies also show adverse effects associated with the use of dietary supplements, especially at high doses. The following study addressed this issue and examined the relationship between dietary supplement use and mortality in a sample of US adults. The study also covered various diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Besides, it was studied whether sufficient or excessive nutrient intake was related to mortality, and also whether the absorption of nutrients from natural foods was different from that of synthetic food supplements. The participants were asked at regular intervals about their diet and intake of dietary supplements. The most frequently consumed vitamin supplements included vitamin C, vitamin E, and vitamin D. The most commonly consumed minerals were calcium, zinc, and magnesium.

The results indicate that the use of dietary supplements has not been associated with mortality. However, benefits could not be demonstrated either, as users of dietary supplements generally had a higher standard of living and often a healthier diet and lifestyle than non-users. Also, no relationship could be drawn from the intake of dietary supplements to death from cancer or cardiovascular disease. The study, however, indicated that the excessive intake of some nutrients could lead to adverse effects. For instance, a correlation may exist between an elevated amount of calcium and cancer mortality. The difference between calcium from dietary supplements and calcium from everyday foods can be explained by the different effects on the circulating calcium: High food intake may lead to reduced intestinal absorption and an elevated urinary tract excretion, while long-term dietary supplementation may not reduce circulating calcium levels.
To summarize, the use of dietary supplements has not been associated with mortality among a nationally representative sample of US adults:

"Although a sufficient intake of nutrients from food may contribute to lower mortality risk, an excessive intake of food supplements may increase mortality. The potential health risks and benefits of using dietary supplements must be further assessed in future studies."

Ingredients of liquid meals?

So what does this study mean for our diet and our intake of liquid meals? Many liquid meals advertise a complete nutritional supply consist of synthetic nutrients or contain artificially added nutrients. Various food suppliers are based on these synthetic nutrients. Some brands, for example, also use a micronutrient mixture to add vitamins and minerals to their products.

So why organic?

According to the law, only genuine foodstuffs may be present in an organic product. BERTRAND is the first certified nutritional drink on the market. In BERTRAND, nutrients come from foods prepared in such a way that they do what we need them to do. Real organic oats, for example, provide protein, but also a good portion of unsaturated fatty acids. Algae provide calcium and linseed as well as omega-3 fatty acids and also vitamin B.
In addition, organic products are less contaminated by pesticides or heavy metals, as food production is strictly regulated. The respectful relationship with nature based on organic products, the sustainable approach and fair conditions for farmers are also important considerations when it comes to organic products. Organic foods are also said to have a higher amount of nutrients on their own, as they have often been grown naturally. For example, prolonged exposure to the sun provides more vitamin D.

Tips for trekking beginners

At BERTRAND, the focus over the next few weeks will be on "trekking", or in other words, long distance walking. There will be short entries on our blog each week, which will whet your appetite for this cool sport.

Today, we have a few tips for you, which will make it easier to start getting involved with trekking as a beginner. And maybe even a few more experienced trekkers will learn something from our tips.

On long tours especially, you will have to be ready for any situation, but at the same time, you also have to carry your own backpack and equipment with you throughout the whole of the tour. This means that if you are on a tour that involves using a tent, you must remember to take lightweight materials. The general rule of thumb is: a quarter of your own body weight, but the lower the weight, the better it is.

Creamy BERTRAND ice cream milkshake

Sometimes, BERTRAND is more than just a shake that contains all of the important nutrients you need. With a little creativity, it can be used as an ingredient as well. Today we have a recipe for a little sinful ice cream delight based on an idea from one of our customers. You're allowed to be a little less healthy every now and then.

Creamy BERTRAND ice cream milkshake

BERTRAND in your favorite flavor
about 150 ml of milk (or a plant-based alternative)
1-2 scoops of ice cream (chocolate, vanilla, fruit, nut,…)
If desired: toppings like chocolate shavings, coconut flakes, nuts

First, blend your BERTRAND. Then, add it into a shaker with the two scoops of ice of your choosing and mix it thoroughly. Top it with whatever you like and you're done.

More information:
Ice cream isn't the healthiest thing you can eat, that much we know. But more than anything it's good for the soul to enjoy some nice ice cream every once in a while. If you want to make your ice cream healthier, just take a few frozen fruits, such as bananas or berries. This will give you some flavorful nice cream.

Trekking – What is it?

The next few weeks at BERTRAND will be dedicated to trekking, i.e. long distance hiking. Every week there will be small articles on our blog, which should make you feel like this beautiful sport.

But what is trekking really? Hiking and trekking are often used interchangeably. Yet, when you go trekking, what’s really meant is a multiday hike. It often means a good place to stay and infrastructure – so no streets or paths. Hiking is used to describe day-long walks on set hiking trails. When we talk about trekking, we’re really referring to long-distance hiking. The word itself means a difficult march.

One of the main reasons for going trekking is to enjoy nature. A desire and a curiosity to return to nature and to discover the natural world as well as ancient or different cultures. Depending on the country and the weather, you’re completely at the mercy of nature, and very much surrounded by it.

However, in some countries, wild camping, that is camping anywhere you want, is illegal. So it’s important for the enthusiastic trekker to stick to these rules and to learn about them. One of the most important rules for every trekker is to respect and to protect its beauty. As the saying goes: & quot; leave nothing but footprints. Take nothing but memories. & Quot;

Trekking provides more challenges than regular hiking. Off the beaten track, you’ll need endurance, stamina, and so mental strength. Because they are remote, you’ll need to make sure your food is light, but also provides you with adequate nutrients. Your body will burn a lot of calories that you’ll need to replenish. But each of your meals should not weigh you down so much that you’re left feeling weak and exhausted.

BERTRAND has the advantage of being very light and fitting in any backpack. It’s quick to make and provides your body with the nutrients it wants for your next trek. [/ Ut_alert]

In our next post, we’ll share some tips for beginners, who are hoping to get into trekking, and maybe even take it for a ride on their next trek.

Self-optimization – is it still healthy?

Miracle Morning, yoga and meditation, productivity curves, superfood, perfectly timed sleep, the ideal diet. All current terms that mean one thing especially in modern times: to optimize and extract the maximum out of yourself. A trend of our time? An outright compulsion? Is it really necessary to achieve the absolute best performance in every area, whether physically or personally?

What is the self-optimization craze?
It seems a little threatening, all that your colleague gets done. Up at 5 in the morning, a session of jogging before breakfast, motivated to work and to stay productive throughout the day while we ourselves sit by wondering: how do you do that? How can I do that?

What we should ask ourselves instead: how does the body deal with that in ten years? Wouldn't this stress, which could lead to burnout, much more likely have negative consequences for me, my well-being and my health? Do we always have to function optimally these days? Time every minute perfectly just so we aren't counted as idle when we sit on the couch for five minutes? A consequence of this mania for optimization in every life situation is often a feeling of overburdening. What is supposed to make us happy causes the opposite instead.

But what, then, is the solution to it all? Bertrand gives some suggestions on how to develop yourself without losing yourself in perfectionism:

  • Finding moderation

This much is clear: With all our fondness for perfectionism we should remember one thing: to sometimes let it all be in order to care for our friends and above all ourselves. A lazy evening on the couch is not at all a bad thing. Morning exercise doesn't work out as expected? You should also calmly accept that. The perfect meal with optimal nutrition doesn't land on your table one time? These are all things that make us human and that we should learn to forgive. Perfectionism is not always everything and a healthy moderation carries you forward much sooner. Why not enjoy BERTRAND, which offers both time-saving and optimal nutritional value, and spend the time gained on your favorite book or in front of the TV.

    Finding moderation
  • Find what makes you happy and listen to your body

The yoga class in the morning fulfills you, but you can't get started with meditation? Then that's fine. Calmly try the variety of trackers, healthy smoothies and optimized morning routines, but do only what feels good to you and your body and what makes you happy.

Find what makes you happy and listen to your body
  • Self-love

At the same time, we should also think about the optimization of our self. The word self-love arises very often in this connection. It enhances self-esteem, makes us strong. Do try to develop yourself steadily, but don't pressure yourself, forgive small mistakes instead. It's OK to be lazy sometimes.
