New flavour — Baked apple and cinnamon

Fittingly for autumn, there is a spreading desire for warmth and cosiness here at BERTRAND, which has taken hold of everyone. Fellow colleagues no longer drive to work by car, but instead use leaf-covered forests paths, in order to hear a rustle that sounds with every step. Everyone is suddenly wearing dark woolen sweaters furnished with leather patches at the elbows, and during breaks, they build figurines out of chestnuts, which they present on the mantelpiece with pride.

We have packed this mood into our new flavour, which tastes like baked apple and cinnamon. As of now, you can purchase it in the shop.

We are preparing something new in to make BERTRAND more practical than it already is. For the very very hasty meals, if you’re just on the go, we have BERTRAND bottles in classic, vegan and active variants. Your daily requirement of nutrients is covered with four bottles.

Proteins

The increase of the protein amount was one of the most popular customer requests and we finally made it happen. The amount of proteins in the daily dose now adds up to 125g in the active version. Besides their activities in the muscle cells, proteins are also responsible for a pleasant and long-lasting feeling of satiety without suddenly causing a feeling of hunger.
We decided to use a milk protein that originated from Swiss biological agriculture and complemented it with natural proteins gained from wholemeal oat, non de-oiled grated almonds, freshly shredded flaxseed, grated sunflower seeds and other healthy ingredients.

Soft texture

Another popular demand was the abandonment of the crunch known from classic versions, which was implemented by using almond flakes. We only use finely shredded almonds in the active variant in order to gain a smooth and pleasant texture that is easier to consume.
By only using our own mills in order to shred all the different sorts of grain found in BERTRAND we could additionally improve on the the degree of grinding and the shredding of our oil-bearing seeds for our active version. In addition to that, using our own mills also helps us to protect the very sensitive unsaturated aliphatic acids from oxidation because they are only decamped right before the packaging instead of waiting multiple weeks in a shelf before being used.

Sugar is a thing of the past

The new active version does not contain any additional sugar. The natural taste of the milk powder combined with canola oil and powder made from agaves is responsible for a pleasant mild sweetness.

More energy

The content of the whole package amounts to 2500kcal.
If this daily dose is too much for you, you certainly can use our active version for individual meals, while using our classic or vegan meals for the rest. But 2500kcal certainly are a welcomed gift for everyone, who tends to wear himself out on a regular basis.

The times of food containing only obvious aspects like nutritional value, comfort and taste as choice factors are over. For this reason, we have created something new, which is suitable for you preference utilitarianists and categorical imperialists as well, and is deemed morally unobjectionable by leading deontologists and teleologists. Vegan BERTRAND.

To develop modern powdered food is unbelievably multifaceted. When you believe indisputably that you have succeeded, and that everything fits mathematically and every nutritional value is met, it will often be lacking in taste. But what is the point in developing a vegan full nutritional powder that tastes so awful that no one will eat it? So: re-evaluate, replace ingredients, perform taste tests, inform suppliers, obtain an OK and then, after weeks: Wham! It’s a go!

Where milk powder had to give way, in vegan BERTRAND we now resort to calcium for excellent bio-availability of the red algae Lithothamnium calcareum and various B vitamins from guava-, basil- and lemon peel extract. For Vitamin B -12, we resort largely to the algae Porphyra spp., which in a previous study was the only non-synthetic and non-animal source of vitamin B12 capable of showing a good bio-availability. A small part of Vitamin B12 is also acquired from the algae Chlorella. Due to the study situation being quite small, we recommend, in compliance with the Vegan Society, to supplement a purely vegan diet with vitamin B12 products. The lack of the proteins due to the absence of milk powder are replicated with an organic rice protein from brown rice in the vegan version. This has an almost perfect amino acid ratio and is therefore just right for our product.

In the end, we did not have to make any compromises when it came to taste. It still retains the typically nutty, milky taste with almonds, cereals as well as freshly ground oil seeds and a good handful of buckthorn.

Due to an unforeseen number of supporters who already pre-ordered our vegan BERTRAND, as well as due to two failed deliveries, we have a back order which will soon be caught up.

Delay for the vegan version

Unfortunately, we cannot carry out a delivery for all orders of the vegan version of BERTRAND in October. We only start on 11.04.2015 with the shipment of the first batch and ship according to the principle of first ordered, first delivered.

The subsequent batch will be probably shipped on 11.13.2015.

We apologize that we cannot fully meet the timestamps set by us. However, we are still waiting for delivery of the alga Lithothamnium calcareum which supplies our vegan BERTRAND with calcium as well as a partial delivery of organic rice protein.

We will finish the vegan version of the nutritional table this week and publish it on our site.

Once your delivery goes into the shipping, you will receive a notification and a tracking link in your account. The shipping in Germany, the US and Canada is done by DHL and within Europe we ship via DHL and UPS for the most part.

Changelog 2.5 – Taking out the oil is passé

We have changed the BERTRAND recipe and this update is devoted totally to oil. Alongside some small adjustments in the amounts of individual ingredients, there is one major benefit with this update: due to the acquisition of new technology it is now possible to supply our flaxseed and sunflower seeds just as they ought to be; no longer partly de-oiled, but with all their oil.

As of the current version 2.5, flaxseed and sunflower seeds will be delivered in their natural state and ground in the owner’s mill no more than 4 hours before the mixing process. We stand to benefit considerably from this hitherto unique process: besides preserving valuable fatty acids, the short time between the grinding process and packaging means that there is optimal protection against oxidisation.

The omega 3 fatty acids which are obtained in this new process, especially the alpha-linolenic acid, are now present in such a large quantity that the body is able to convert them into the essential fatty acids EPA and DHA, even if the conversion rate is below 5%.1

Of course we also provide our our ground almonds in the full fat version and not in the much cheaper de-oiled version.

Bilberries are back once again.

After what seemed like an endless few weeks, we can proudly announce today that BERTRAND is available once more in the bilberry flavor.

Over the last couple of weeks we have contacted numerous suppliers of natural aromas, but unfortunately it was much more difficult to realize the project than we initially thought. As an organic brand, according to the EU-Eco-regulation we are only allowed to use natural aromas. The term natural aroma denotes a flavor that is extracted from natural products rather than synthetic imitation. Our bilberry flavor is thus extracted from natural bilberries.
Another distinctive requirement is the fact that natural aromas in organic products may not be produced using genetically modified organisms (GMOs), nor may they contain any genetically modified organisms.

These requirements really cut down the number of possible suppliers, so that we are very proud to be once more able to present our most sought-after flavor. And it tastes amazing: starting with a natural, nutty grain flavor, gently accompanied by the bilberry flavor following at the end.

As usual, in BERTRAND vegan’ all the vitamins and minerals derived from natural sources. BERTRAND vegan’ is a modification of our flagship product BERTRAND. To replace the vitamins and minerals that come from dairy products in BERTRAND, we use at BERTRAND vegan’ especially from the algae world. A big thanks goes to sound explanatory names like Lithothamnium calcareum which for example provides calcium.

The possibility of pre-order is set up and the end of October we will start shipping. BERTRAND vegan will be available in the same flavors as our original. The envisaged ingredient list is already visible in the detailed view of the respective packets.
