Firestairrun - Stair run 2019

Again we met with firefighter Guido Hartmann, but this time he didn’t just run for a good cause, he was also the organizer of the Firestairrun in Paderborn. This charity run took place for the second time this year.

During the fire department’s stair run, people in full operational clothing climbed and descended the steps of the stair tower at the H building of the University of Paderborn. These ascents and descents are sponsored this year by 17 companies, including pharmacists and manufacturers of work clothing and of course BERTRAND. For the first time this year, the team of the St. Luise Paderborn Children’s Hospital was also present to collect money for children who are seriously ill. The money raised will be donated in equal parts to two foundations: “aktion benni & co e.V.” of the German Duchenne Foundation and “Hilfe für das krebs- und schwerstkranke Kind e.V.” from Paderborn.

Besides Guido Hartmann, Björn Beil, firefighter of the Paderborn Fire Department, and Mathias Schmidt, ambassador of the German Duchenne Foundation, were also present. We were able to have a short interview with all three dedicated runners.

Guido Hartmann

Guido, how do you prepare for such a stair run?
To run with you! Running stairs now and then, of course. Especially when you are – either voluntarily or professionally – in the fire department, you should have a certain affinity to sports, and this run is a good example of that. And, of course, to live healthy, it is not only about being fit for this event, but even more important to stay fit and healthy.

And what exactly is the purpose behind this run?
We are making it difficult for ourselves today. The sick children for whom we collect have a hard time all their lives. We want to make it difficult for ourselves for eight hours by running in combat uniforms. And of course we also want to draw attention to the children’s illnesses.

And what about your diet?
Among other things, I use your BERTRAND products. I use them mainly as a supplement on days when I have a stressful assignment. It is healthy and it provides me with everything and it is organic. I attach great importance to that.

Guido Hartmann

Guido is one of the two organizers of the Firestairrun and also a firefighter of the Paderborn Fire Department.

Michael Schmidt

How was the staircase actually created?
I’m organizing another run in Höxter, which has already taken place for the sixth time and I thought, why not organize another challenge in winter? Together with Guido I started the Firestairrun one year ago.

And how did you prepare yourself?
Not at all, honestly. I’ve been sick. However, I was at a marathon in Boston this year.

Do you know and use our BERTRAND products?
Of course I know them and use them from time to time. Especially when you don’t have the time. I especially like the active version and the blueberry flavor

Will it continue next year?
Of course. The disease does not stop!

Michael Schmidt

Michael is the organizer of the Firestairrun and also ambassador of the German Duchenne Foundation.

Björn Beil

Björn, how did you prepare for the run?
Actually I am a lifeguard, so I swam a lot. That’s how I got into triathlon. I also started running a little at the fire department because it’s very easy to combine with family life. With Guido I trained with the fire department in our tower to run stairs.

How do you eat?
I already pay attention to my diet. With my family I always try to cook healthy and fresh food. I tried BERTRAND products for the first time last year and I think they taste good.

And what is your motivation for this run?
The children are clearly in the foreground for me. Whether I finish second or third is not that important.

What do you see as the challenge of the stair run?
The challenge in this run is time. Eight hours is a long time, so you have to pay attention to nutrition and drinking. That takes a lot of energy.

Björn Beil

Björn Beil is also with the Paderborn professional fire department, lives in Gütersloh and occasionally trains with Guido. He also runs other races, such as the New Year's Eve run in Gütersloh or the Easter run in Paderborn.
