Enthält BERTRAND Histamine?

Customers with histamine intolerance have asked us about the tolerability of BERTRAND. However, answering this question is not so simple, as various factors must be taken into account. On the one hand, the histamine content is important and can fluctuate considerably; on the other hand, the content of biogenic amines and other substances that can block diamine oxidase (DAO).

BERTRAND for histamine intolerance?

BERTRAND contains ~20 different natural ingredients, which can be classified in tables according to tolerability. We have filtered out the ingredients in BERTRAND that may cause problems for customers with histamine intolerance and described them in an overview. You can also find all the ingredients in our FAQ. The data listed here was taken from the recommendations of the Swiss Interest Group Histamine Intolerance (SIGHI).

Laboratory analysis for histamine

In addition to comparing our ingredients with the recommendations of the Swiss Interest Group Histamine Intolerance (SIGHI), we also had our product subjected to an accredited analysis according to DIN EN ISO/IEC 17025 by our regular laboratory, INTERTEK Bremen. No histamine was detectable in the product. The analysis can be viewed here:

Walnuts – approx. 2.4 g per 100 g BERTRAND
Walnut flour can cause symptoms in customers with histamine intolerance, as it contains amines and also acts as a liberator.
Carob bean gum – approx. 1.0 g per 100 g BERTRAND
Carob bean gum itself contains no histamine. However, it may contain other amines or act as a liberator.
Sunflower seeds – approx. 4.0 g per 100 g BERTRAND
Sunflower seeds act as a liberator and can therefore cause symptoms.
Guava and lemon – less than 0.2 g per 100 g BERTRAND
Guava and lemon act as liberators. Lemon also contains other amines that can potentially cause problems. However, these two ingredients are generally unproblematic in BERTRAND, as their proportion is still below 0.2 g per 100 g BERTRAND.
Nutritional yeast – approx. 0.4 g per 100 g BERTRAND
The nutritional yeast in BERTRAND is unproblematic in this respect, as it has been deactivated and contains only a very small overall proportion of glutamate.

Conclusion

BERTRAND contained no detectable histamine in our laboratory analysis. However, it contains ingredients that could trigger symptoms in customers with histamine intolerance. We therefore recommend consulting a doctor or nutritionist and initially ordering a small package to try it out. Due to the possible conversion of the amino acid histidine into histamine, we recommend that people with histamine intolerance treat BERTRAND like a perishable product and store it refrigerated or frozen.
